YEGP Wins a Prestigious ICT Award: WSIS Project Prizes 2014 Contest

 

 

Geneva: The “Youth Employment Generation Programme in Egypt” has been awarded the prestigious World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Project Prizes 2014 contest, a unique recognition of excellence. The contest received 141 projects and initiatives from 44 countries for 17 categories. Projects have been honored, recognized and presented with an award during the WSIS Project Prizes 2014 Ceremony at the WSIS+10 High-Level event in Geneva, Switzerland on Tuesday, June 10th, 2014.

The ‘Youth Employment Generation Programme in Egypt’ financed by the Government of Japan is one of the Egypt Information and Communication Technology Trust Fund (ICT-TF) projects, established by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Egypt in cooperation with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT).

“UNDP is proud to partner with MCIT and the award is testimony to the innovative work and effective contribution of the project in supporting a key development challenge in Egypt – addressing the issue of youth unemployment through information technologies”, said Anita Nirody, UNDP Resident Representative, Egypt.

The winning project was recognized for its outstanding effort, excellence and achievement in implementation as part of the yearly competition held by WSIS to achieve their goals of improving connectivity to information and communication technologies (ICTs).

The project addresses the mismatch between the skills demanded by the private sector and youth skills to provide youth with the necessary vocational, IT and soft skills to increase their employment prospects. The project is in complete relevancy to the needs of youth, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) owners and entrepreneurs, in addition to its relevancy to the government policies and labor market requirements. The project benefited 2172 MSMEs, 137 social entrepreneurs and 487 fresh graduates across Egypt.

It has established a mechanism to bridge the gap between private sector companies and youth so as to increase their opportunity to access internships and enter the job market with the needed skills.
